Tuaran: Non-governmental organizations are encouraged to develop more initiatives aimed at empowering rural women, especially in the tourism sector. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, said skills-building projects or courses aimed at enhancing the role of women are essential to help strengthen the economy and improve the well-being of rural communities. “These days, there is a universal sense of gender equality and empowerment, especially in the workplace,” Joniston said, according to a statement.

“The involvement of women in leadership is clearly seen in the community when women actively participate in the economic activities of the community.” For example, he said many women become craft entrepreneurs and explore business options in the food and beverage industry.

Joniston, who chairs the Sabah Tourism Board, said this at the closing ceremony of a young women’s empowerment program in Kampung Mantob here on Friday.
