Gorey’s beloved art shop, Different Strokes, is closing for the last time

After eight years of serving the creative community in Gorey, Different Strokes Art Shop on St Michael’s Road is about to close.

Founded by Sara Redmond when she returned to her hometown of Gorey, the arts, crafts and graphic supplies store has proven hugely popular with artists from across the community. In recent days, Sara announced the imminent closure of the store in a social media post.

“Opening the shop, I never could have imagined what wonderful new friends I would make and what supportive customers I would meet. So many kind and generous people. It has been an absolute pleasure to share in your creative journeys over the years. Thanks for turning to inspire me.

I will not give endless explanations. Life changes… business changes. The store will continue to operate until Christmas, and when it closes in January, so will we. A reminder to anyone with vouchers to try to get in and redeem them before then.

Concluding her announcement, Sara quoted Alan Watts as saying, “The only way to make sense of change is to immerse yourself in it, move with it, and enjoy the dance.”

When contacted, Sara declined to elaborate on the closure. Many local artists have expressed their support for Sara and the store since the announcement.

“The Shop will be greatly missed, but I wish you much happiness and success in your next chapter,” said Oonagh Latchford.

“Sorry to hear that Sara. We will surely miss you. Wishing you the best in your new endeavor,” Cearuilín Ní Conchubhair said.

“I am so sorry to hear this news, you have been wonderful, very helpful and patient with us fans. Good luck on your new adventure,” Kate Tyrrell said.
