Pat Catan craft stores close – Business Journal Daily

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Michaels Companies will close Pat Catan’s 36 art supply stores in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2018, the company said in its quarterly policy report.

There are Pat Catan stores in Austintown, Boardman, and Niles, as well as Hermitage, PA.

Michaels Companies, which also operates Michaels craft stores, purchased Pat Catan’s in 2016.

“Over the past three years, we have created value through the significant expansion of our China-based sourcing team and the growth of our wholesale business,” the company said in its report. “However, Pat Catan’s retail business has struggled in the face of headwinds in the industry.”

A dozen stores will be renamed Michaels in fiscal 2019, although the company has not specified which locations will be updated. There are Michaels stores in Niles and Boardman.

Michaels’ Strongsville distribution center will remain open. Nationally, Michaels has more than 1,100 stores in 49 states and Canada. Pat Catan’s operates in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia.

“We are committed to providing opportunities for all affected team members and are working closely with our staff and local communities to help manage this transition,” Michaels Companies said in its statement.
